An understanding of today’s industrial relations and human resources environment is of utmost importance in business as demonstrated by recent high profile stories in the media regarding underpayment of employees and unfair dismissal claims. To assist members, NGINA will be conducting an information workshop for financial Members designed to share relevant information in these subject areas.
Agenda topics will include:
The basis of Employment Law
The foundations of the system | The interaction of the Fair Work Act, Award and Contracts | National Employment Standards | Understanding these concepts in order to navigate the everyday issues
A basic understanding of the relevant Award that applies | Classifications | Overtime | Penalties | Public Holidays

Full Time Part, Time, Casual, Fixed term | Documents for engagement – what to know, how to do it, what to avoid | New cases on Casual Engagement – how to structure your casual workforce
What to pay
Minimum Award obligations | Salaries vs wages (considering the benefits vs the traps) | Various ways to pay and what you need | The paper trail: Payslips, timesheets, record keeping
Unfair dismissal risk | General protections risk | Case examples of what to do and how to do it | 'War Stories' on when it goes wrong and the learnings from those stories | Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination | The Essentials – what you should know and consider.
In addition to the outline above, the facilitator, Matthew Waring will ask participants their particular interests and areas of relevance at the start of the day, in order to be able to tailor the content to meet their information needs.
Matthew Waring is an accredited employment law and Industrial Relations Specialist with the NSW Law Society and operates his own legal practice, Waring Legal and Waring Employment Advisors that specialises in employment and servicing clients in commercial advice and litigation. Matt regularly deals with large clients in agriculture, building and construction, manufacturing and maritime industries. He has previously spent time with the NSW Farmers Association as its Special Counsel and Acting CEO, and is also engaged by Hort Innovation as their Company Secretary.
