Brendan Moar’s first attempt at designing and building a Show Garden, won him a Gold award and the prestigious Best in Show award at the Australian Garden Show Sydney in Centennial Park.

Brendan designed his garden in conjunction with the NGINA (Nursery & Garden Industry of NSW & ACT) focusing on the idea of being up close, surrounded by, and immersed in plants. Suspended celebrates the theme ‘plant life balance’, with the shape and form of plants within the garden driving the architecture of the space rather than the other way around.

The hanging plants suspended, floating and defying gravity are at the heart of the garden. Plants hover above a central pond, their vertical lines echoed by other elements throughout the space. Low slung platforms curve back upon themselves repeating the form of a dramatic snake-like silver pipe planted with a profusion on flowering and edible plants.

I’ve never done a show garden. It’s the most challenging thing I’ve done and exhausting but also the most satisfying,” said Moar after accepting the award.

Suspended was constructed with the generous support of members of the not-for profit organisation NGINA which represents growers, retailers and suppliers of plants and related products. It was because of this support in the form of the donation of plants, materials, time and expertise that such an amazing garden was created by Moar.

This is a world-class event, bringing together some of the best horticulturists and landscape designers from Australia and around the world. The quality and variety of gardens built for the show is just incredible but Brendan demonstrated an innovative approach to garden design the judges couldn’t go past,” said Graham Ross, Better Homes and Gardens TV presenter and presenter of Radio 2GB’s Garden Clinic.

The Nursery and Garden Industry NSW and ACT are proud to be associated with Brendan's show winning garden. It is an inspiring garden that reflects on the key industry message of plant life balance by being immersed in plants in an urban environment. Many thanks to our members for their gracious assistance in making this vision come alive.” said David Foster, CEO of NGINA

Major contributors to the garden include: Alpine Treemovals, Andreasens Green, Botanica and Paradise Nurseries, Burbank Nurseries, Elegant Outdoors, Garden Gate Nursery, Glenfield Nursery, Oasis Horticulture, Ramm Botannicals, The Green Gallery, Valley View Nursery, Concept Interiors, Eco Outdoor, FRG Bagnall Pty Ltd, Palmer Building, Rhystyle Landscapes, The Art of Tiles and Water Logic.

The award was presented by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO Governor of New South Wales and Patron of the Australian Garden Show Sydney.
